Great hotel very close to main attractions, with spacious rooms and an excellent staff. (Special thanks to Ivailo who made our stay especially memorable with his willingness to help and his wonderful sense of humor.) As a bonus, the hotel also contains the largest collection of contemporary Bulgarian art--there's fabulous art everywhere, the lobby, hallways, individual rooms, breakfast area, everywhere. The pool and fitness room are really nice; the pool requires a swim cap so be sure to take one.

Bad!

Stay away!! Very old and dirty! At best a 3-star hotel. Breakfast not particularly good. Bathroom door was broken and the staff was unfriendly. Actually extremely disappointing!

Great potential

In general, could say that the hotel preferred art over comfort, but it's still pleasant to be in it.
Sculptures and artistic paintings throughout the entire hotel, including the rooms
A bit feels like staying in a gallery.
The staff we encountered throughout our stay was courteous.
When we arrived, the receptionist explained a number of important things about the hotel, but there was no written explanation. We didn’t check if the pool and gym was indeed free as she told us, other reviews mentioned that there was a fee.
Our room was in the new wing, which is confusing to find among the corridors, and the tiny elevator, with 5 rooms on each floor.
The rooms are the size of a small apartment, beautiful, huge and comfortable bed, a lot of space in the cabinets, mini fridge with some snacks and drinks, but this is where the 5-star feeling ends; there were no available power outlets, only one usable power outlet, next to the bed.
To use the coffee machine, we had to unplug the fridge, and macchine wasn’t working properly, besides that, only 3 white sugar packets.
The air conditioner was noisy, some of the lights didn’t work.
The water flow in the bathtub was good but it wasn’t designed well enough to get shower without getting the floor all wet, inside the bathtub there is a shower gel that is supposed to function as shampoo.
There were sticky stains on the TV dresser, but other than that the room was clean.
In the beautiful hallway, water damage really spoiled its nice appearance.
The so-called attached casino is just a row of slot machines.
The hotel’s restaurant is only open for two hours in the evening, the entrance from our wing was creepy, a dark and messy backroom/storage, the fresh juice comes from a bottle, the menu is not large, the food was mostly tasty, the portions small,
The waiter was nice and helpful.
The pianist, who played several classical pieces, greatly contributed to the atmosphere.in all a beautiful restaurant but not worth the price, another example of wasted potential.
And with all that, it should be remembered that this hotel is cheaper than any of the 5-star hotels in the center, you get what you pay for.
Regarding the location, it is true that there is convenient public transportation to everywhere and a good mall nearby, but around the hotel there are offices and neglected houses, almost no one is around when evening falls, which personally felt a bit unpleasant.
And with all that, it should be noted that this hotel is cheaper then any of 5 stars hotels in the center, you get what you pay for, although with a bit of effort by the hotel management on the small details, this could be one of the best hotels.

Terrible hotel

The worst hotel of my entire life as a traveler. Filth upon entering. When we arrived, we had to clap for the receptionist to come. It has nothing of a 5-star hotel. 2 stars anywhere in the world. 2-star breakfast. We wanted to have a coffee on the 5th floor where it says it was possible. Upon entering, it looked like a storage room for a company. Things thrown everywhere, upon arriving where it seemed we could have coffee, we were almost treated as if we were going to steal. We had to look for a bar outside the hotel. Very poor treatment.

Hotel with an art focus.

We stayed 3 nights at Hotel Anel. Check-in and check-out went smoothly. Our room was on the 4th floor and in good condition (not worn out). The furnishings were dark but still stylish. The decor was dark but still stylish.
Art is highly valued throughout the hotel; statues and paintings can be found everywhere. There is even said to be a gallery in the basement.
The breakfast buffet is abundant and good, offering both a selection of cold items (cold cuts, several types of cheese) and warm dishes (fried eggs, scrambled eggs, sausages, vegetables), as well as fresh fruits and vegetables. There is also muesli and sweets available.
On the 5th floor, there is also a restaurant. We visited once; a table reservation was not necessary as it was not very busy. The prices were quite reasonable and cheaper than in Austria (e.g., €11 for a porcini risotto). Both dishes (risotto and duck) were also convincing in terms of flavor. The 10% discount for hotel guests was also applied without any issues. Now, regarding the location:
The immediate surroundings are admittedly not the prettiest, but one can reach attractions like the Serdica ruins or the Rotunda of Saint George on foot in about fifteen minutes. Additionally, the red and yellow metro lines are practically right at the doorstep. The Mall of Sofia is also only about a 10-minute walk away. All in all, it is a good choice for a city trip!
I would come back anytime!!!
