Charming Family Hostel with Animals and Great Hospitality

Good title options:
* “Warm, family-run hostel on a peaceful farm in Vík”
* “Charming family hostel with animals and great hospitality”
* “Cozy farm hostel with wonderful hosts and a few noise issues”

Shortened review (your tone kept, tighter version):
We’ve stayed in many hostels across Europe, and family-run ones are by far our favorite. This charming, well-run and well-loved hostel is tucked at the end of a small road on a hill in Vík, on a small farm with ducks, chickens, horses, and dogs.
The staff—the husband, wife, and daughter—are incredibly friendly and attentive. My son and I stayed four nights and felt very welcome. The entire place was cleaned and vacuumed daily, and the rooms were well maintained with plenty of light, clean linens, and extra seating. You can tell the family loves people, loves running this hostel, and loves their animals. They also sell local hand-knit items and fresh farm eggs, which were delicious.
We would definitely stay again when in the area. The atmosphere is friendly and respectful, and Icelandic prices are high, so we were glad we booked early for a good rate.
The only downside was noise. Our room was under the dining area, and chair movement in the early morning and late evening carried through quite a bit. Some padding on the chair legs and clearer quiet-hour reminders would help.
Other than that, it was an excellent stay.

Just ok.

We stayed in room #2- arrived and as others mentioned- no one was there, just a letter telling you which room is yours- ours had 2 very (very) small beds. For two short girls, the beds were fine size but if you’re taller or wider you would not fit. The downstairs rooms smell like stinky shoes and are quite stuffy- we stayed 3 nights but I wouldn’t stay again. Also 0 space for suitcases, etc. Ear plugs and eye masks are a necessity- the first night I had neither and between the midnight sun and the noise of other guests I did not sleep. With them night 2&3 it was fine. The bathroom was soaked the whole time- pretty sure the sopping floor mat was the same one our whole stay & the sink counter and floor were wet and gross- I was glad I brought flip flops to wear. Bathrooms are a competition to use, as well as kitchen space. Lobby seats have seen much better days. For one night this would be fine- as the location cannot be beat. The dogs, chickens and ducks are so cute! For the cost I expected the bathrooms to at least be cleaned, and the rooms to not smell so bad.

Good option but book early

We found this place to be quite good other than the high cost. There was free parking, a good room with spotless shared bath, and the kitchen and rest of the place were all very clean. Some minor noise at night, but nothing to keep us up. We booked late so we got walloped on price, but so it goes.

Who gives a Duck, Dog.

Great location. Room had a great view of the ocean. Up on a hill. Breakfast included. Kitchen was nice and big. Close to the main vik area. really a nice cozy place with dogs, a cat and few bird species to keep you occupied.

Shockingly bad

I’m writing this right from the hostel sitting on my bed (bench with a thin mattress on it)
We had booked 2 nights but I have booked another hotel for the 2nd night as we will not be staying here another night.
On arrival it looked ok, except noticed constant buzzing noise from air conditioning unit on wall in reception area.
No one around to greet us just a note stuck to the reception window telling you to pick up a letter from the basket, this had details about room number etc. we were asked to remove outdoor shoes and leave in reception, there were flip flops /slippers available if you wanted
We were in room 2 which was down some stairs into the basement. The room is tiny stuffy and smells damp. There are 2 very narrow beds which are more like benches with mattresses, you have to make your own beds up with bed linen that has seen better days a very long time ago. No towels have been left so we can’t shower, not that I’d want to as shower room is grimy and shower full of black hairs.
Apparently there are only 2 bathrooms with integrated toilet so if they are in use and you need the loo you have to wait…a long time….because it seems they are constantly in use. This is in a building that can accommodate 20+ guests!
The walls are paper thin so you can hear every movement and conversation from your neighbours and the constant comings and going’s from the bathroom by people clumping up and down the steps make it near on impossible to sleep.
In fact take into account the smell of damp, old grey bed linen, blinds and door that don’t fit properly so the light seeps in, uncomfortable bed and pillow, dirty bathroom constantly in use, noise from neighbours next door and above, constant buzzing from air con unit (yes it can be heard from bedroom) a room so stuffy it’s making me cough I can’t wait for the morning so we can leave
If it hadn’t been for the fact we have an activity booked in the area for tomorrow we would not have stayed tonight
On top of this there is no one available to speak to about these issues so no chance of being refunded for a sleepless night. Oh well it’s now nearly 1:30am only 5 more hours to go
Apparently the breakfast is good, we won’t be staying to find out

Very good location
