Beautiful setting, gorgeous room and wonderful service. We only stayed one night but I could happily live there!

Wonderful first time experience!

Visited for dinner and an overnight stay on Sunday and had a great experience. Of course, it is largely all about the food here and we were not disappointed. We had the signature menu and each course was exquisite. Much discussion ensued during the evening about which courses were our favourite. It was almost impossible to choose! Perfect, beautiful presentation, with great explanations from the knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff and each mouthful was delicious. We decided also to choose the wine flight and were so glad we did so as we felt it really elevated the whole experience. The sommelier was excellent ( so sorry we can't recall his name ) and gave us wonderful, interesting explanations of what we were tasting and why it paired with each course. His enthusiasm was infectious!
We stayed in the pavilion and had a lovely, very large room which had a beautiful outlook over fields. So peaceful. Delicious scones on arrival were also a lovely touch!
Although I have briefly mentioned it above, I must finish by congratulating the staff here. The best food and drink in the world would be spoiled if the service wasn't up to scratch. All the staff were just the right mix of professional and relaxed, warm and friendly. Special mention to lovely Charles who went out of his way to grab us delicious bar snacks as we obviously looked far too hungry to wait until dinner! ;)
It was a lovely anniversary treat.

Excellent Taster Menu but Hotel needs improvement

Very much a curate's egg, the parts that needed improvement could so easily be improved.
First the positives. The Taster Menu was excellent, technical high-end cooking as you expect from a Michelin starred restaurant. The staff were attentive and informative.
Having rejected our first room, Holkham, (more about that to follow), we were pleased with the upgrade to a suite, Fellbrigg for 2 of our 3 nights stay. A quick resolution to an initially disappointing arrival.
On booking we were advised of a complimentary cream tea on our arrival. Very disappointed to be served 2 macaroons and nothing else. When asked the staff advised they would see if there was anything else in the kitchen and produced 2 scones, so 'short' in texture that they fell apart on cutting. Not an impressive start.
Re our first room, Holkham, a standard room which fell well below standard. The only view from the window was of the tiled roof of an adjoining section of the Hotel. We were told we should have requested a view on booking! The website describes the standard rooms are 'generously apportioned' this room was cramped. The Hotel should advise this room has a restricted view and adjust the rate accordingly. On our 3rd night, when we moved back to Holkham, the sash windows were very difficult to open, no extractor fan in the bathroom and the rainforest shower head is not in a good position with water going over the side of the bath making the floor very wet. Also no safe in either the Suite or the standard room, as quoted on the website.
So many niggles that could surely have been avoided

Great food and pleasant stay but front of house needs improvement

The room was comfortable, the overnight stay pleasant enough and the situation good for accessing local nature reserves. Best of all was the tasting menu in the restaurant which was truly exceptional. The one let-down was the service, which was good in parts but patchy, both during dinner and at breakfast.

DEATH TRAP HOTEL

This is a very badly run hotel by amateurs. This will certainly lose their Michelin star.
Whilst the food was good, but not Michelin star quality (hard lumps of skin in the duck)
the hotel its self is run down with big problems. Our room had the main lights stay on for no more than 10 minutes then switch off, the wall switch ( this was a dimmer ) was red hot. The bedside lights flicker and go off. Needs an electrician urgently as this is how people die. The ladies toilets there are just 2 One doesn't flush the other has no lock. Reception was aware of both these problems. Failed double glazing everywhere so much so you cant see out of some windows. Money is sadly short on maintenance.
On leaving we were offered a 10% reduction in our room rate only which was the same as the service charge they had added. As this was a birthday celebration I made no fuss as not wanting to sour the event further.
All in all a death trap hotel with people running it who have no regard to customer satisfaction and who are of the opinion that they are doing you the favour of letting you stay there.
